Joanna Rutkowska
Computer Security Researcher & Founder of Qubes OS
Biographical Overview
World-renowned Polish computer security researcher. Rutkowska gained international prominence in 2006 by inventing the "Blue Pill" hypervisor rootkit, and subsequently created Qubes OS, an open-source operating system that enforces compartmentalized security-by-isolation via Xen micro-hypervisors.
"Never trust an operating system that relies on antivirus software. Compartmentalize your digital life or prepare to be owned."
— Joanna Rutkowska
Historical Context & Impact
When Rutkowska demonstrated Blue Pill at Black Hat 2006, Microsoft executives initially insisted it was impossible to virtualize an operating system on the fly without rebooting. Rutkowska demonstrated it live on stage in less than a second, forcing Intel and AMD to redesign CPU virtualization security.
